Give Your Outdoor Space a Summer Glow Up
Declutter and Clean
Before diving into any upgrades, ensure your patio and deck are clean and clutter-free. A thorough cleaning can make a massive difference.
- Pressure Wash: Rent a pressure washer to remove dirt and grime from surfaces.
- Declutter: Remove any unnecessary items to create more space and allow existing features to shine. I stumbled upon this great article on Good Housekeeping that we all can relate to as we all have some of these items tucked away and forgotten in our outdoor space.
Reimagine Existing Furniture
You don’t necessarily need new furniture to give your space a new look. Instead, consider updating with what you already have.
- Repurpose: Use indoor furniture or thrift store finds as unique patio pieces. I swapped our existing coffee table with a cluster of few smaller tables to give a more interesting look. Matchy- matchy furniture can make the space look dated.
Add Textiles for Comfort and Color
- Pillows and Throws: Use colorful, weather-resistant pillows & throw to add a pop of color. Fringe is back in a big way and if you want to instantly add some an element of fun go for this look.
- Outdoor Rugs: Define the area with an outdoor rug to create a cozy atmosphere. Make sure your rug is big enough to cover the front feet of your furniture and is not floating in the center. A small rug can actually make a space appear smaller.

Place the front legs of the sofa and chair on the rug.

More seating? Size up to keep front legs on the rug all around.

Sofa with Chaise
9 x 12 Rugbr> Choose a rug big enough to extend several feet beyond the foot of the chaise.
Incorporate Greenery
Plants are a cost-effective way to breathe new life into your patio or deck.
- Potted Plants: Use pots of various sizes and colors to add depth and interest.
- Artificial Boxwood: Is a great way to add greenery with zero maintenance and the bonus is you create an outdoor oasis with privacy from the your surrounding neighbors.
Lighting for Ambiance
Good lighting can transform the mood of any space.
- String Lights: Hang string lights for a whimsical, inviting glow.
- Solar Lights: Use solar-powered lights for an eco-friendly and budgetfriendly option.
- Floor Lanterns: A mood-setter for gatherings indoors or out. Group a few rattan pieces in different shapes and sizes for an easy, breezy coastal feel.
Functional Additions
Enhance your space’s functionality with a few thoughtful touches.
- Fire Pit: A simple fire pit can become the focal point for gatherings
- Sun Umbrella: You can have some fun with color and style with the umbrella. Make sure you choose one with a heavy duty stand of good quality that will withstandnd our changing weather.
- Drink Cart: One of my favorite pieces. It’s so cool and handy when entertaining. You can store all your drink essentials in one spot.
- Storage Solutions: Use benches with storage to keep supplies and cushions tidy, while getting extra seating
Decorative Elements
- Outdoor art: You can get eclectic and mix and match different styles.
- Candles: how can you go wrong with them. Use them in the evening for a cozy, intimate moment.
- Wall Mirror: Yes, if you have an open niche like my deck shown above you can get creative and hang a mirror. They always compliment a space and make a it appear bigger.
By focusing on these simple ideas, you can create a refreshed and inviting patio or deck that your family and friends will love. Remember, the key is to be creative and use what you have, enhancing it with a few strategic purchases to create a cohesive and welcoming outdoor space.
